Most project tools cap subtask depth, and the instinct behind the cap is sound: unlimited nesting without discipline produces trees nobody can navigate.

But the cap is its own problem. When an epic legitimately needs four levels and the tool stops at two, you flatten work that wasn't flat — and lose the structure that made it manageable. The answer isn't a lower ceiling; it's a few habits.

The single habit that makes deep hierarchies livable is aggressive collapsing. Any branch that isn't relevant today should be folded shut.

Stronger than collapsing is zooming: make any task the root of your view so everything outside it stops existing.

A 500-task launch becomes the 30-task design-system branch, and that is genuinely all you see. This is focus mode with teeth — the workspace reconfigures around the work in front of you instead of asking you to ignore the rest.

Let AI draft the structure

The hardest part of a deep tree isn't typing it, it's deciding how it should be shaped. That decision is where most people stall.

Describe the project with a slash command and let AI generate the hierarchy. You typically get three or four levels of reasonable structure in seconds — about twenty minutes of manual work — and editing a draft is far easier than facing a blank outline.

Know when to stop: the next-action test

Borrowed from GTD: every branch should bottom out in concrete next actions — tasks small enough to finish in one focused session.

If a task still reads as abstract (“Work on backend”), it needs another level. If it reads as concrete (“Write the /auth endpoint schema”), it needs no children. That single test tells you both when to go deeper and, more importantly, when to stop.
