Every project starts with a blank screen and a sentence. “We need to launch the mobile app.” “We need to hire three engineers.” “We need to be in the new office by Q3.”

Those are outcomes, not plans. Turning them into plans means work breakdown: decomposing something vague into concrete, sequenced, assignable tasks. That decomposition is expensive — it needs domain knowledge, experience and uninterrupted attention. A model can do a credible first pass in seconds; you bring the parts it can't know.

The blank canvas problem

Project managers, team leads and individual contributors all report the same experience: sitting in front of a new project with no idea where the first cut goes.

It isn't a knowledge problem, it's an initiation problem. The first move is the hardest one. AI helps because it converts generation into reaction, and reacting to a flawed draft is dramatically cheaper than producing a good one from nothing.

Describe, don't configure

There is no form to fill in and no template to choose. Write the description the way you'd say it out loud: “Launch our SaaS product in three months — engineering, marketing and customer success.” Then hit the slash command.

You get an Engineering phase with infrastructure, features and testing; a Marketing phase with content, ads and launch events; a Customer Success phase with docs, onboarding and support setup. Output quality tracks description quality almost exactly, so it pays to write two sentences instead of five words.

AI converts generation into reaction — and reacting to a flawed draft is far cheaper than producing a good one from nothing.

Choosing how deep to generate

For strategic planning, two levels — phases and workstreams — is usually the right resolution. Going deeper too early creates detail you'll throw away.

For execution planning, three or four levels gets you to items somebody can actually pick up on Monday. You can also generate shallow first and drill into a single branch later with another command, which is generally the better habit.

From generated hierarchy to assigned sprint

Once the tree is refined, switch to Kanban to set up status columns, @mention teammates on the branches they own, and set dates on the phases in the Gantt view.

When engineering still lives in Jira
